BODY OF WORK: UNSELLABLE, 2019

The raw denotation of relentless oppression is a dilemma on the art market: it is simply unsellable. A silenced, shrouded body disrupts the bourgeois living room wall. The solution is an absurd Dadaist upgrade: attach two innocent daisies to the bundled form, and the connotations promptly tip into palatability. Real trauma is declared an ironic posture.

The more ridiculous the sign, the smoother the transaction. Meaning is not dissolved, but capitalized upon as a mute relic of ‘modern aesthetics’. ‘Modern’ functions as a magic word disposing of all social accountability: a decorative centerpiece with guaranteed profundity, praised in its emptiness because it neither hurts nor acts.

“Only when suffering turns into farce does it find a buyer.”

Studio note, Vienna 2019:
Nobody wanted the silenced figure. It was too bleak, too heavy, simply unsellable for the pristine wall at home. So out of pure cynicism, I attached two daisies to it – and suddenly it works. I turn horror into silliness, and the market applauds the ‘wit’. With every glance at these blossoms, I catch myself realizing how effortlessly genuine unease is disposed of through a stylish punchline.
