BODY OF WORK: UNSHARP #02, 2014

An attempt to stimulate the viewer's imagination. In his 2006 essay "Between Imitation and Simulation – The Blurred Image," Bernd Hüppauf addresses the phenomenon of the blurred image and its reception. According to Hüppauf, blur is "a visual simulation that violates the rules of imitation and documentation." Blur deprives the image of its status of singularity (cf. Hüppauf).. Die Unschärfe entzieht dem Bild den Status der Einmaligkeit (vgl. Hüppauf).

The controversy arising from this debate over the significance of detail and sharpness is rooted not merely in media discourse, but originates in the epistemological question of whether truth is to be found in what is objectively measurable (sharpness) or in the essence of the matter (blur). Where blur affects the entire photograph, the primary concern becomes the conveyance of a feeling or impression. The object is replaced by its representation or its symbol. The image turns into a sign, and photography—grounded in the fundamentally pictorial constitution of the world—is elevated to a universal language (cf. Stiegler). Stiegler).

Work note, Vienna 2015
I wanted to witness what a face looks like when civilization momentarily suspends itself. Not as a gesture of violence, but as the physical sedimentation of sheer affect. The ash upon the skin and the unforgiving light strip away all veneer of social decorum. What fascinates me: in the instant of the emotional ambush, there is no pretense – only in the scream does the individual shed their role, reduced entirely to body and raw tension.
